IRR | THE BLENDING BOUNDARY

The design is intended to improve the existing functional allocation as well as to maintain and elevate the existing synthetic and aesthetic characteristics of the building. The existing structure of the building is characterised by a middle boundary zone which separates programmatically and visually the public from the private uses of the house.

Conceptual Design

The proposal negotiates the in-between boundary and creates a dialectic experience which is achieved by articulating rectangular voids, solids and backward wooden elements. Therefore, it operates like an internal membrane which negotiates the boundary line and achieves a complex and multi-layered experience. At the same time, it relocates the centre of the living room area towards this boundary situation. Therefore, the boundary situation will elevate the dwelling experience and achieve a nuanced approach to integration – segregation dilemma.

Visibility & Permeability Relations

This project challenges the flat distinction between private and public spaces of a residential unit since it connects and disconnects functional units by articulating physical visibility and permeability conditions.
